Question

Scanners
Hi Doug,
It was a pleasure to meet you in SJ on Winchester Ave. I bought my Canon FTB while stationed in Vietnam and learned the basics of photography through trial and error. A camera has been with me forever.

It's like a treasure chest finding old slides and negatives that I had stashed in old boxes in the garage. After my mother passed, I claimed all of the old photos and purchased an Epson V500 about 2 years ago. I digitalized over 19 gigs using the quick user's guide. I did not know what setting to use for the different media. Your explanation of imaging helped quite a bit and I will rescan some of my favorites.

I have read your articles and will be sending your web site to my 2 globe trotting photo shooting cousins. They both have good composition skills and your web site will certainly help them improve their skills and find inspiration in your articles and photos.

Question

Memories
I found your site on an idle search for Gonnasu, Japan. I spent many, many days sitting where the photo "One man on the Sea if Japan" was taken, contemplating life. Then I realized that most of your other "favorite" photos were favorite memories of mine as well. I'm not a photographer, so I don't fully understand composition, etc., however your photos have that element that says "that's it! that's what it's really like"! Thank you!

- Marty McCarthy 6/22/2009 4:00:14 AM

  Answer Marty,
A lot of Americans lived in this wonderful little corner of the world, from the Korean conflict until just a couple of decades ago. We were in the US military, were military dependents, or contract workers, such as teachers. Our relationship with the Japanese was cordial and happy. For me it was a wonderful way to wind down after Vietnam. My Japanese friends my own age had a great influence on my present views of war and its effects. They were never judgemental toward my role as a soldier; they were only kind and considerate.

Question

Your keen "eye"
Dear Doug,

What you have managed to capture with your lens over the past few years serves as an inspiration to all photographers and anyone who sees your pictures. The balance of people, their place on earth and the setting are masterfully combined to paint a picture that is truly worth a thousand words. Thank you for sharing the pictures with the world and keep up the good work.

Question

Gannosu Japan
I was born during the Korean War in Fukuoka Japan but my parents lived in Gannosu. I spent a blissful two years on the hip of a Japanese woman hired to look after me. Your photo "Contentment" really resonated with me and I wanted to thank you for it.

- Carol Lewis 7/13/2006 7:09:08 PM

Answer Gimme an address, Carol, (at Contact Me)and I will send you a printable CD digital file. It'll take a while, as my computer is down, but I can extract the photos from my hard drives. If that doesn't work, I will send you a print. The mom in the photo lived in the seaweed cultivating community at the left end of the bay side beach.

Question

Medium format - Bronica
Hello,
First, let me say that I love you pictures - travel photography is something I love doing as well, and yours is very close to what I do. I saw that you added a Bronica RF 645 to you outfit - are there any photos from it? Do you have any more comments and/or recommendations? I was thinking about adding a MF camera as well. Like yourself, I tried digital and I'm back to film, with my Old Leica and Voightlanders. While I have Canon 10D, I think I would prefer MF better.

- George Spinner 11/13/2005 9:19:55 AM

Answer George, I am in the very early stages of medium format. I expect to have a few pics in a coupla weeks. For me, the Bronica is like a big film version of the Leica CL. I will use the 65mm (like the 40mm in 35 size) as my main lens, with the wide angle 45 (28 equiv) as a backup. No one camera can do everything. Teles and macro still need 35mm SLR's. An alternative to the Bronica is the Mamiya 6 with the 75 and 50mm lenses, and the Mamiya 7 with the 80 and 65. I was put off by the Mamiya 6 and 7 prices ($1,000 for ONE lens) and the 7's reputation for maladjusted rangefinders.

- Doug N.  11/13/2005 9:47:24 AM

  Answer George,
The last two in the Washington, DC gallery were shot with the Bronica.

- Doug N.  11/17/2005 3:34:09 AM

  Answer Hi Again,
Thank you - I did look at those. Hope to see some more soon. I'm still debating which MF to go with - as I want something lighter and somewhat portable. I do like the look of a 6x6 format, but you are right - mamiya 6 is on a pricey side. Maybe I will bite a bullet and get it anyway. Well, we will see - still researching.

Question

love the photographs of austria, switzerland
my daughter and I were looking through your photo gallery- she said that's where she wanted to go, even if we had to save for a long time. You captured a feeling! sometimes it seems like people make photos 'enhanced' trying to catch attention. I so much more appreciate the beauty you capture.

- Cathrine  7/29/2005 7:27:38 AM

  Answer Catherine

We loved both countries, but Austria is somewhat less expensive. Try flying into Munich, renting a car, and driving into Austria. Look for a town called Kauns. There are numerous inns, and fine, uncrowded hiking. You won't want to leave Kauns.
